Outlaws Triumph in the Sun

Leicester Storm Academy 26
Nottingham Outlaws Development 46

An inexperienced Outlaws development team got their first win of the season with a strong and determined performance against Leicester Storm academy.

The Outlaws preparations were not ideal as several late withdrawals meaning the team arrived with just 12 men, but took the field with a full compliment as some surplus Leicester players were drafted in. With no fewer than 6 debutants, 4 making their Rugby League bows hopes were not high, and when Leicester scored next to the sticks from the opening set it looked like it may be a long afternoon.

However, rather than letting their heads drop, the outlaws manned up and started to get a foothold in the game. Their efforts were rewarded when Callan Willatt stormed over to open the account, with Phil Reaves adding the extras for 6-6. Outlaws continued to press but fell behind after successive penalties piggy backed Storm upfield, and they crossed to regain the lead. The Storm extended the lead after a cheeky chip and chase for a great solo effort, with the conversion leaving the outlaws 6-16 down.

With some barnstorming runs from Willatt, Was and from debutant Hackland, Outlaws again began to take a foothold in the match, and it wasn't long before they were again on the score sheet with Waggstaff bursting over for a try under the posts, with the conversion bringing Outlaws with a score at 12-16. That score arrived in the next set, when outlaws got close to the line, and Scott-Nelson rolled back the years for a cheeky dummy half score. Reaves' only conversion miss of the afternoon meant the scores were level.

Leicester Stormed back into the game through their fullback who beat 4 men for a cracking 60m score, and the sides went off for half time with Leicester leading 20-16.

The half-time team talk was very positive, and highlighted that with superior fitness, and the benefit of the slope in the second half the game was there to be won. Confidence was high, and it took only 4 minutes of the second half for outlaws to start to take control of the match, with winger Britton beating his man, and scorching down the right wing for a try under the posts. The conversion gave Outlaws the lead for the first time, and it was a lead that would remain intact for the rest of the game. Some outstanding goal line defence, led by Bennett and Harrison, kept Storm at bay, and kept the pressure on the Storm outfit who were starting to tire.

With Frost and Goulty starting to run the show in the middle, and Gregory & Bennett making advances out wide, gaps were appearing, and Waggstaff burst through to get his second of the afternoon, and with the conversion the lead was 28-20. Leicester got a try back after some mistakes gifted good field position, and they made no mistake with a deserved try under the sticks for 28-26, and nerves were jangling on the sidelines. The players remained composed though and put Storm to the sword in the final quarter, Hackland added a converted score with a powerful run. Then with the ball bobbling along the floor Willatt showed experience beyond his years to score whilst everyone else was expecting the ref to blow for one of 3 knock ons, there was no denying the big front rower his second of the match for 40-26

With the game in the bag, the style and swagger you'd expect from a Shepherd coached team began to show. Outlaws were beginning to keep the ball alive and it was no surprise when they crossed again, with Was going over, a well deserved reward for a great captain’s knock. Shortly after, the referee brought the game to a close with the Outlaws gaining their first Development Team win.

The hardest job of the day was to pick a man of the match award, with so many people standing up to be counted. In the end debutant Waggstaff walked away with the honours.

After the match the stand-in coach Page said "It was an inexperienced team out there, but every man stepped up a level today, there are so many positives from today, but this team will only get better, the boys did me proud".
