For the benefit of Foz
These are the rules that are used for the junior small sided version of the game, so a start point for our version.
Please bear in mind that we're using monday nights to work on skils and rules for the full game. We don't want to have to start to need a ref as that means one less person gets to play
Tag Rugby League Rules
1. The tag belt must be worn around the waist on top of all loose clothing. The tags are positioned on either side of the hips with teams being distinguished by the colour of the tags they wear.
2. The teams in possession / attack has the ball for a total of 6 tags.
3. A try is scored in the normal way, by placing or touching the ball down on or over your opponent’s try line. NB players will not be allowed to dive over the try line in the act of scoring a try.
4. Only the player in possession of the ball may be tagged. A tag is the removal by a defender of one of the two tags attached to the ball carriers belt. The ball carrier cannot fend off or guard / shield the tags in ANY way, including spinning. When a defender has removed the tag, he/she stands still at the point at which the tag was removed, holds the tag above their head and shouts ‘TAG’ for all to hear. This tag is then confirmed by the referee who then calls tag followed by the number in the sequence of 6 which it is. The attacker returns to where the defender is holding the tag and restarts the game by playing the ball backwards in the correct manner. Immediately following the play the ball, the defender must present the ‘tag’ back to the tackled player. Neither the defender nor the ‘tagged’ player can take any further part in the game without both ‘tags’ being properly in place on their belts.
5. If the acting half back (player receiving the rolled ball at the play the ball) is tagged in possession of the ball it will result in a handover of possession to the opposition and a play the ball restart.
6. The Referee will stand 5m from the tag, all defenders must return behind this point to be onside and able to play a part in the game.
7. No Ball Stealing
8. All infringements will result in a handover of possession to the non-offending team at the place of the infringement, play will be restarted with a play the ball
9. After a try has been scored the non-scoring team will restart with a play the ball at the centre of the pitch.
